Chuck Schumer embarrassed Democrats by losing this huge fight
Democrats are grasping at straws to save their majorities in the House of Representatives and United States Senate.
The Left’s latest Hail Mary effort ended in failure.
And Chuck Schumer embarrassed Democrats by losing this huge fight.
Democrats seized on the leak of a draft Supreme Court opinion written by Justice Samuel Alito that struck down Roe v. Wade as their political salvation in November.
But those hopes proved to be absurd.
Senator Majority Leader Chuck Schumer teed up a doomed-to-fail vote on the so-called “Women’s Health Protection Act,” which was the most extreme pro-abortion bill in American history.
Democrats wanted a messaging vote to show their voters that Republicans supposedly “obstructed” their pro-abortion agenda.
That plan imploded in spectacular fashion, as the bill failed 49-51.
Republicans slammed the bill as fringe and dangerous.
“Today’s vote on the Women’s Health Protection Act is a continuation of the left’s mission to undermine the legitimacy of the Supreme Court and prop up their abortion-on-demand agenda. This bill would force states to legalize late-term abortions, remove informed consent laws, and prevent restrictions on gruesome fetal dismemberment procedures. Today, I stood up to the woke mob and voted to protect women and their unborn children,” Tennessee Senator Blackburn stated.
“The Democrats’ radical pro-abortion bill would disenfranchise every voter in Missouri, overturn our state laws – and give the power to DC Democrats,” Missouri Senator Josh Hawley declared.
Schumer’s plan went awry because West Virginia Democrat Joe Manchin defected, voting against the bill.
The bill did not fail to advance because of a Republican filibuster.
Schumer’s pro-abortion power grab failed because a bi-partisan majority voted down the bill.
Manchin later told MSNBC that the legislation was extreme because it expanded Roe v. Wade by eliminating every single state level restriction on abortion.
“The bill we have today to vote on, the Women’s Health Protection Act, and I respect people who support it, but make no mistake — it is not Roe v. Wade codification. It is an expansion,” Manchin explained. “It wipes 500 — 500 state laws off the books. It expands abortion.”
“And with that, that’s not where we are today,” Manchin added. “We should not be dividing this country further than we are already divided. And it’s really the politics of Congress that’s dividing the country. It’s not the people. They are telling us what they want. And it’s just disappointing that we are going to be voting on a piece of legislation which I will not vote for today.”
Abortion will not save Democrats in November because the Left’s position of abortion-on-demand with no restrictions is not even popular with their own voters.
