A 2020 contender made an announcement that Donald Trump loved
Democrats believe that they have 2020 in the bag.
They think they can trot out the most radical members of their party to defeat Trump.
But one candidate made an announcement that could seal their fate.
New candidates are jumping in the Democratic Party presidential primary for their chance to take down President Trump.
The Washington, D.C. consultant class insists Trump’s a sitting duck.
But billionaire Howard Schultz, former CEO of Starbucks, is teasing that he could jump in the race as an independent candidate.
Schultz, who has the ability to self-fund, could play the role of spoiler like Ralph Nader did in 2000.
The Atlantic reports:
These days, the difference between the parties is starker than it’s ever been in modern times. Yet here comes Howard Schultz, a billionaire who feels that he might be the answer to American politics, and that he’d run for president as an independent.
Schultz, the former Starbucks CEO, says in a 60 Minutes interview already recorded but airing on Sunday that he is thinking very seriously about a presidential run—but he stops short of a full announcement.
He makes clear, however, that if he moves forward, he will do so as an independent.
Already top Democratic operatives working for presidential candidates and beyond say they’re worried that the only thing he’ll accomplish is making sure Donald Trump gets reelected. It’s more than just sniping at a prospective opponent; word that he might invest in an independent run has many of them clearly worried about how he’d split votes in a general election.
If Schultz runs as an independent, he could hand the race to Donald Trump on a silver platter.
After all, as head honcho at Starbucks, Schultz clearly catered the coffee chain toward liberals.
And he was a vocal supporter of Hillary Clinton in 2016.
Trump knows that Schultz would only draw away votes from the Democrat nominee.
So he sent out a tweet goading Schultz to run.
Howard Schultz doesn’t have the “guts” to run for President! Watched him on @60Minutes last night and I agree with him that he is not the “smartest person.” Besides, America already has that! I only hope that Starbucks is still paying me their rent in Trump Tower!
